Facebook Annual Conference – F8 Highlights

f8

As scheduled Facebook’s annual conference, F8 begins yesterday and as expected, brought lot of fresh news and exciting features. I’ve summarized all important events below at one place which is all you need to know.

  • 800 Million Users:
Yes, Facebook now have 800 million users and most of them are active. Report ran from last month data shows whooping 500 million active users daily. Mark Zuckerburg confirmed 750 million users back in June. so, 50 million users added in just 4 months. This shows the incredible growth rate of Facebook.
  • Timeline to replace profile:
Facebook brings this major update to profile page and it is the most interesting thing F8 brought for all users. So, to simply put, Timeline is ‘Story of your life’. It summarizes all important posts, photos, apps etc from your daily sharing on one single page. The Timeline starts right from when you born and covers all the years till date. You can view/add/edit posts listed on it. You can go back in time e.g. 1984 and add your pics when you were just a new born baby.
Facebook slowly rolling out this update over next few weeks but if you don’t want to wait follow our quick guide to get your Facebook Timeline right now.
  • Like button extended with Facebook Gestures – “Watched,” “Listened” and “Read”:
Even though you click ‘Like’ button for a lot of posts, pages, you often wish for more options like  “Listened” to a song or “Watched” a video, rather than simply liking it. To solve this problem Facebook is rolling out three new buttons, “Watched,” “Listened” and “Read”. If this is not enough, newly announced Facebook Gestures gives power to developers to create any actions such as ‘Dislike’ button.
  • Facebook Apps only needs permission once:
Once you granted permission to the app to post on your wall or use some of your personal info, it can use it anytime later without asking you. Now this can be misused by spammers or malicious app owners and thus could be controversial feature.
  • Small updates to the Ticker:
All small updates would appear in a live ticker which Facebook rolled out few days ago. Small updates include friends status updates, changes in relationship status etc. The ticker updates automatically even if you don’t refresh page. You just sit back and see whats going on in with others.
  • TV and movies, music, News all at one place – Facebook:
Facebook partnered with bunch of services and start ups to bring you all this at one place. Now you can watch a show on Hulu, read Yahoo news, movies on NetFlix or listen to the songs on Spotify. The live ticker I mentioned above will tell you who other is watching, listening or reading the same thing and let you discuss it with that person. I personally like this feature very thoughtfully built.

You need to wait until all these new features to roll out in your country over next few weeks. It would be interesting to see what Google Plus do to keep up.
