On Friday 9th Dec Mannheim Regional Court announced ruling on one of the patent infringement lawsuits Motorola Mobility filed against Apple in Germany in April 2011. According to the latest hearing, iPhone and iPad sales could be banned across Europe.
The infringed patent is described as “a method for performing a countdown function during a mobile-originated transfer for a packet radio system.” Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents said, Friday’s hearing was preliminary and it is only enforceable against Ireland based Apple subsidiary Apple Sales International.
The injunction lists the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad and iPad 2, though the iPhone 4S is likely included as well. To get around this ban, Apple must remove the infringing functionality from its iOS devices or successfully appeal to Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court.
