The SACOM, which is a Hong Kong based students and scholars activists group have recently published a report that concludes that hardly any changes have been made with regards to the working conditions of iPhone & iPad manufacturing Factory. since the results of the in depth audits had been furnished by the Fair Labor Association.
The results that are published by SACOM have arisen based upon the interviews and discussions taken place with about 170 employees and personal visits to many of the Foxconn factories. The norm, as stated were the high targets set up for production, the very inhumane working conditions, remuneration cuts etc. 4 total changes in Foxconn has been demanded by SACOM, they are –
- The trade union officials should undergo a proper selection procedure.
- The wages should be increased to match up to the current standards of libing
- Proper safety and training protocols be given to the employees
- Access to the required protection
- Proper remuneration should be granted to those employees who have been infringed upon.
Thus, it is a good thing top knows the ever famous Apple industries cannot get away with sub standard employment facilities. It is a god thing that they are thoroughly being watched. The previous watch dog units have been on a comfort zone with Apple thus fabricating the reports. Even after the implementation of the changes, SACOM has still found that the employees are not being paid as per their efforts put in. Even though the wages have increased, the reduced working hours have brought a smart reduction in their final pay.
It has been only a few months that the reports on the iPad and iPhone factories have been out, the changes are however, being implemented at a very slow pace. Apple has indeed taken certain initiatives to improve the working conditions, however, ultimately Foxconn is the supplier not a subsidiary and hence the pressure exhibited n them is limited.
