The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a robots manufacturer, has revealed that it’s developing a gigapixel camera. The new gigapixel camera will be capable of taking pictures that are at a much higher resolution than the human eye can see.
The agency has been successful testing 1.4 and 0.96 gigapixel resolutions camera prototypes. And it hopes to reach between 10-50 gigapixels resolutions as well. Keep in mind that a gigapixel is 1,000 megapixels, or 1 billion pixels.
The prototypes were developed as part of DARPA’s AWARE program to help improve the military’s vision in battle.
At the moment, the gigapixels camera is two-and-half feet square and 20 inches deep. But the agency expects it to be shrunk and get even more useful, as they learn more. Stay tuned for more on the matter.
