While the folks over at Barnes & Noble have been remaining mum on the further upgrade to Nook Color tablet, it hasn’t stopped independent developers from XDA forum to port the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the slate — thanks to CyanogenMod 10 Alpha.
Shipped with a custom version Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the Nook Color tablet got upgraded to Android 4.0 ICS through alternate builds of Android.
Moving on, the XDA devs have been working hard on Nook Color Jelly Bean update, however they’ve spent a lot of time upgrading to a newer kernel and improving hardware support.
Though, almost everything works fine the way you’d expect; some bugs are still subject to be found.
That said; along with Netflix, the HD YouTube video playback isn’t supported [although standard definition YouTube videos look fine] on the tablet when upgraded to the Google’s latest operating system. Moreover, the slate can’t be waked up from sleep while pressing the “n” button. So if you want to plug the device into a wall charger, make sure to wake it first from sleep, otherwise it won’t detect the charger.
Though, do note that the developers are still working hard to get those bugs fixed.
So if you are dare enough and prefer tinkering with your gadgets, you can either install CM10 to Color’s internal memory, or load it on a MicroSD card.
And if you ask me, then I would suggest you to get the Alpha build on external storage, because it lets you dual-boot your tablet. What does that mean?
Well! If you go through external storage option, you can insert the MicroSD card and reboot your system and you’ll be in CM10. Again, remove the card and reboot and you’re running the stock NOOK Color software (or whatever else you may have installed on the internal storage).
The new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean CM10 Alpha brings the same UI found in the Nexus 7, Iconia Tab A110, and other 7-incher devices.
On the other hand, in case you’re fancy the sort of design we usually see on 10 inch tablets, you can modify CyanogenMod 10 to use a “tablet UI.”
