In the past, laptops were (as the name suggests) destined to be used on laps. Unfortunately, very few of us actually use our laptops on our lap because they either get hot, the angle is uncomfortable or they simply aren’t very lap friendly. Let’s face it, while they’re fantastic portable machines that allow us to do work on the go, they aren’t the most practical when used on a moving train or a cramped coffee shop. Most of us still carry a mouse around with us and some even go as far to carry a separate keyboard because the chiclet keys are frustrating to use as opposed to a high-quality mechanical keyboard.
However, laptops are going down a different route now and we’re actually seeing a divide. There are ultra portable laptops that are meant to be taken around every, and then there are desktop replacements which are sometimes known as ultrabooks. These ultrabooks are becoming more and more popular thanks to their powerful hardware and practicality as desktop replacements, but should you replace your regular desktop computer with it?
1. Ultrabooks are powerful
In the past, laptop hardware was nowhere near the power of an equal cost desktop computer. Although laptops will always be slightly less powerful than their desktop counterparts, that doesn’t mean they’re not capable of doing all your daily tasks, playing video games and even performing stressful tasks such as video editing. There are plenty of powerful laptops available online and it’s far better than buying from a store since you can customise them to your liking.
2. Screen size is no longer an issue
One of the biggest complaints that laptop users have is that their screens are just too small for their needs. We can remedy that now because you can find the perfect 17inch laptop for you on the internet. Some laptops have even larger screens, and if that’s not enough, don’t forget that almost every laptop comes with a video output port that will allow you to connect it to a separate screen.
3. It doesn’t have to be ultra portable
A lot of people think that laptops should only be used on your laptop, or that they need to have fantastic battery life because you’re going to be constantly outdoors or away from a source of power. However, even college and university students have access to power outlets, and many commercial airlines also have power outlets available for their passengers in economy class. This ultimately means that if you are out and about with your laptop, you probably have some place to charge it and thus, a table to put it on.
4. It takes up less space
When you get a laptop, you’re going to be saving a lot of space on your desk. You won’t need an ugly computer tower gathering dust and you don’t need loads of cables. This can give you a clean and elegant workspace that’s nice to look at, easy to clean up and can fit on almost any sized table.
